This event was part of a series of massacres perpetrated in the area during 1983, a year that saw a dramatic intensification of violence in the provinces of Huamanga, Huanta and La Mar. The district of Chiara was the scene of multiple attacks during this period, including the murder of 20 community members in Sachabamba in July 1983 and the murder of 32 villagers in Huarapite in April 1984.
