Fortunato Gavilán García, lieutenant governor of Uchuraccay, was killed by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso when he tried to flee into the jungle. Gavilán had been a central figure in the events of January 1983, actively participating in the capture and threatening of peasants from Iquicha, whom he threatened to kill by 'making them chicharrones'. During the months following the massacre of the journalists, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso carried out systematic raids in Uchuraccay to assassinate those who had participated in the massacre. In the first attack on May 20, 1983, his wife Marcia Gálvez Ñawpa and his sister Juana Gavilán García had already been murdered.
