In August 1983, a 48-hour strike began in Puno to demand economic aid to confront the emergency created by the drought. In response to this social mobilization, five parliamentarians from the department of Puno went on hunger strike in the Chamber of Deputies. The strike was a protest measure against the economic crisis and the lack of governmental support to face the drought affecting the department.
