On July 27, 1983, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso attacked the Camelid Technical Research Institute located in La Raya, on the border between the departments of Cuzco and Puno. This attack marked an important moment in the expansion of the internal armed conflict into the high provinces of the department of Cuzco. The high provinces began to become an important zone of the internal conflict with this attack, followed later by the attack on the Civil Guard police post in Tinta on November 12, 1983, both in the province of Canchis.
