Arrival of military after second trekking attack on Uchuraccay
Two days after the second Shining Path attack on Uchuraccay on July 16, 1983, the military arrived on July 19 and authorized the burial of the dead. This delay showed the community's lack of protection against PCP-SL attacks.
On July 19, 1983, two days after the second Shining Path PCP attack on Uchuraccay occurred at midnight on July 16 during the feast of the Virgen del Carmen, the military finally arrived in the community. The military authorized the burial of the dead from the attack, in which several people had died including Alejandro Perez Garagondo, one of the party's stewards. This attack had been perpetrated by about fifty members of the PCP-SL who entered the village through the upper part of Tikllaqocha. The late arrival of the military forces, two days after the massacre, is evidence of the pattern of abandonment and lack of protection in which the communities in the area found themselves.
