At midnight on July 16, 1983, after the feast of the Virgin of Carmen in Uchuraccay, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso attacked the community, killing another 20 Uchuraccaínos. This attack was part of a series of systematic reprisals by the PCP-SL against the Uchuraccay community, which had led one of the first peasant rebellions against subversion. The attack occurred approximately two months after the first Shining Path incursion of May 20, 1983, which had left around 20 dead. These attacks continued throughout 1983 and 1984, eventually leading to the complete abandonment of the village by the survivors.
