Assassination of 20 community members in Sachabamba

The PCP-Sendero Luminoso killed 20 community members in Sachabamba, district of Chiara, province of Huamanga, in July 1983. This event was part of the wave of violence unleashed after the arrival of the Armed Forces in the region.

In July 1983, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso raided the town of Sachabamba, Chiara district, Huamanga province, killing 20 community members. This event was part of a series of massacres perpetrated by the Shining Path in the district of Chiara during 1983, which also included the murder of 10 community members in Bellavista in September of the same year. These events occurred in the context of the entry of the Armed Forces into the region in January 1983 and the intensification of the internal armed conflict in the provinces of Huamanga, Huanta and La Mar.
