In July 1983, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso perpetrated a massacre against ronderos and community members in Buenavista, Los Morochucos district, Cangallo province. This attack took place in the context of the intensification of violence in the region during 1983, a year that registered the highest number of deaths in the department of Ayacucho. The inhabitants of Buenavista were forced to move to Pampa Cangallo, where there was a military base, to seek protection. After approximately one year, the villagers were able to return to their community.
