This event occurred in the context of the military counteroffensive initiated in January 1983 against the PCP-SL. In 1982 and 1984, Tiquihua was under the command of the 'unknown' (SL), which led to the establishment of military bases in Tiquihua, Hualla and Chincheros. The disappearances took place in the Canaria military barracks, where the people were taken and never heard from again.
