On June 24, 1983, a group of thirty subversives of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso assassinated Alcira Benavides Albeo in Madrid, annex of Huarautambo, district of Yanahuanca. She was accused of being a "gamonalista" and was subjected to a popular trial before her execution. After the assassination, her hacienda was looted and her belongings and animals were distributed among the villagers. This event occurred in a context where the PCP-SL continued its strategy of controlling the countryside by assassinating local authorities and landowners in 1983, a year in which the area had not yet been declared a state of emergency.
