PCP-SL raid at Uchuraccay
On May 20, 1983, at dawn, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso attacked the community of Uchuraccay killing around 20 villagers in retaliation for the peasant rebellion against subversion. This was the first systematic attack in a series that would devastate the community.
In the early morning of May 20, 1983, days before the feast of the Holy Spirit, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso raided the community of Uchuraccay and killed around 20 villagers. This attack was part of a series of reprisals by the PCP-SL against the community, which had staged one of the first peasant rebellions against subversion in January of that year. The raid occurred just four months after the massacre of the eight journalists on January 26, 1983. This was the first of multiple attacks that the PCP-SL would carry out against Uchuraccay throughout 1983 and 1984, causing more than a hundred deaths in the community.
