First Shining Path PCP attack on Uchuraccay

First reprisal attack by the Shining Path PCP against Uchuraccay on May 20, 1983, during the feast of the Holy Spirit. At least eight people were killed, including relatives of Lieutenant Governor Fortunato Gavilán García.

On May 20, 1983, during the feast of the Holy Spirit (Corpus Christi), the Shining Path PCP carried out its first reprisal attack against Uchuraccay for the participation of its community members in the death of the journalists on January 26. The attackers shouted threats saying that they would finish off everyone in Uchuraccay and that they would drink booze and blood in the skulls of their heads. That early morning several people died, among them Marcia Gálvez Ñawpa and Juana Gavilán García (wife and sister of Lieutenant Governor Fortunato Gavilán García), Paula Ccasani Figueroa, Marina Ccasani Figueroa, Alberto Romero Nawpa, Telésforo Ayala Díaz, Sacarías Mauli and Alejandro Chávez. This was the first of three major attacks that the PCP-SL carried out against Uchuraccay during 1983, as part of their revenge against those who participated in the killing of the journalists.
