On May 20, 1983, the PCP-SL carried out the first of three bloody attacks against the community of Uchuraccay. In this first raid, around 20 peasants were killed. This attack was part of the PCP-SL's retaliation against Uchuraccay, after the community members murdered eight journalists on January 26, 1983 and participated in actions against the Shining Path. The attacks would continue on July 16 and December 24 of the same year, resulting in a total of approximately 135 deaths out of 470 community members registered in the 1981 census, that is, one third of the population of Uchuraccay was killed mainly by the violent action of the PCP-SL and also by the rondas of neighboring communities and towns.
