Attacks by the PCP-SL in Páucar

PCP-SL takes control of Paucar, assassinates authorities and school principal

In May 1983, a contingent of 200 peasants led by a platoon of armed Shining Path members entered the district of Páucar, harangued the population and threatened the authorities. A month later, in a new assault on the town, the authorities and the school principal were assassinated for not resigning. Later, four more authorities were killed in the neighboring village of San Juan de Yacán. Testimonies refer to children and adolescents in the PCP-SL contingent, parading with red ribbons and giving cheers to Chairman Gonzalo. The district was left in the hands of the PCP-SL.
