In May 1983, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso entered the town of Yerbabuena taking advantage of the absence of the Republican Guard. During this incursion, the subversives assassinated 29 villagers. This attack took place in a context of increasing violence in the Chungui area, where the PCP-SL sought to expand its territorial control. The event occurred a few months after a mixed base was installed in Pallqas and the first peasant patrols were organized in neighboring communities such as Ninabamba, Mollebamba and Santa Carmen.
