Murders in Sucuytambo

In May 1983, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso carried out assassinations in the district of Sucuytambo, province of Espinar, Cuzco, as part of its first violent incursions into the department's peasant communities.

In May 1983, the first PCP-Sendero Luminoso raids and assassinations took place in peasant communities in the department of Cuzco. Among these initial attacks was the one in the district of Sucuytambo, in the province of Espinar. This event is part of the beginning of the violence in the Cuzco region during the period 1980-1983, when the internal armed conflict was beginning to expand from Ayacucho to other areas of the southern Andes. The high provinces of Cuzco were beginning to become an important zone of internal conflict.
