This attack was part of a series of reprisals by the PCP-SL against the communities of the Huanta highlands that had organized against them. The community of Huaychao had led the first peasant reaction against Shining Path in January 1983, assassinating seven Shining Path members together with community members from Macabamba. This act had been publicly praised by President Fernando Belaunde as an example of patriotism. The May assassination was part of a campaign of revenge by the PCP-SL against these rebel communities.
