Matará's razing

In May 1983, the Peruvian Army razed the community of Matará in Accocro, burning houses and causing approximately 25 victims among the murdered, tortured and disappeared. This event was part of the indiscriminate repression implemented after the arrival of the Peruvian Armed Forces in the region.

In May 1983, members of the Peruvian Army razed the community of Matará in the district of Accocro. During the operation, they burned houses, killed, tortured and disappeared approximately 25 people. This event was part of the strategy of indiscriminate repression implemented by the Armed Forces after taking control of the counter-subversive struggle in Ayacucho in January 1983. The razing of Matará takes place in the context of the years 1983 and 1984, which registered the highest number of civilian murders in the provinces of Huanta, Huamanga and La Mar.
