In May 1983, residents of Hualla, a district in the province of Victor Fajardo, were detained and later disappeared by soldiers from the Canaria barracks. This event took place in the context of the military counteroffensive initiated in January 1983 against the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in the region. The detention and disappearance of these villagers was part of a series of military operations carried out in the area during that year, characterized by arbitrary detentions, torture and forced disappearances. The year 1983 was particularly violent in Víctor Fajardo, with the highest death toll in the entire department of Ayacucho.
