Trekking incursions in Lucanamarca and Huancasancos

PCP-Sendero Luminoso raids in Lucanamarca and Huancasancos in April 1983 that resulted in approximately 80 deaths, events that received little media coverage despite their magnitude.

In April 1983, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso carried out armed incursions in the towns of Lucanamarca and Huancasancos in Ayacucho. These incursions resulted in approximately 80 deaths in total between the two localities. The CVR report mentions these events in the context of contrasting the unequal media coverage that different massacres received during the internal armed conflict. While the massacre of 8 journalists in Uchuraccay received wide coverage, the raids in Lucanamarca and Huancasancos, despite their higher number of victims, did not receive more media attention.
