On March 22, 1983, shortly after the installation of the Political Military Command in Huancavelica, an Army patrol ambushed a contingent of 25 subversives of the PCP-SL in Jala, district of Vilca. In the confrontation 24 Shining Path members were killed. This military action temporarily contained the expansion of subversive actions in the Vilca river basin, although PCP-SL incursions continued in the following months in neighboring districts such as Moya.
