Army raid in Lucanamarca

Surprise military incursion in Lucanamarca on February 24, 1983 resulted in a confrontation with Shining Pathists, leaving 9 dead including "comrade Nelson", an important leader of the PCP-SL in the area. The army subsequently appointed authorities and demanded the population to capture another local Shining Path leader.

On February 24, 1983, the army made a surprise incursion into Lucanamarca, at a time when some of the local leaders of the PCP-SL were meeting. A confrontation took place in which 9 people died, among them one of the important leaders of the PCP-SL in the area, "comrade Nelson". Once the situation was under control, the army gathered the population in the square where they named authorities with the intention of reestablishing order and demanded the population to rebel against the PCP-SL. The army demanded that the community take prisoner another important local leader of the PCP-SL, a native of the area, who was captured days later, killed by the community members with stones and sticks, doused with kerosene and incinerated.
