The first popular trial carried out by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in Lucanamarca occurred on February 17, 1983. The victim was a 74-year-old community member who served as vice-president of the community. This community member had held almost every position in both the community and the district throughout his life. He was accused by the PCP-SL of being "rich and abusive" and executed after the popular trial. This event is framed in the context of the increase of assassinations carried out by the PCP-SL in the Huancasancos area during February 1983, a period that preceded the violent reaction of the community members against the subversive organization.
