Huaychao Massacre

On January 21, 1983, community members from Huaychao and Macabamba killed seven PCP-Sendero Luminoso militants as part of the first inter-communal peasant rebellion against subversion in the highlands of Huanta, Ayacucho.

The community members of Huaychao and Macabamba murdered seven members of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. This event occurred in the context of an inter-communal rebellion against Shining Path in the highlands of Huanta province. The event was preceded by the assassination of the president and lieutenant governor of the Huaychao community by the PCP-SL in December 1982. The community members buried the seven murdered PCP-SL members in a single grave, similar to how the victims would later be buried in Uchuraccay. General Noel reported these murders on January 23, saluting the 'courage and virility' of the peasants.
