Killing of seven hikers in Macabamba and Huaychao

On January 21, 1983, community members of Macabamba and Huaychao killed seven Shining Path members in response to previous assassinations of community authorities by the PCP-SL. It was the first peasant action of this nature against the Shining Path, publicly recognized by President Belaunde.

On January 21, 1983, the communities of the Huantina puna reacted against the PCP-SL by assassinating seven Shining Path members in the communities of Macabamba and Huaychao. This was the first action of this nature by peasant communities against the Shining Path. The fact transcended the local media, especially due to the public recognition of President Fernando Belaunde, who pointed out this peasant response as an example of patriotism and as the 'resurgence of Ayacucho' against the 'ideological garbage' of the PCP-SL. This action occurred almost at the same time that the State handed over the direction of the counter-subversive struggle to the Army, and preceded by a few days the assassination of 8 journalists in Uchuraccay on January 26, 1983.
