Huaychao Massacre - Iquichanos kill hikers

Iquichan villagers of Huaychao kill seven hikers in rejection of their authority

The Iquichanos in the heights of Huanta killed seven hikers in the community of Huaychao, as a reaction to the assassination of communal authorities. The authorities of Huaychao, such as the Lieutenant Governor, Varayocc and Municipal Agent, began to argue with the Senderistas, telling them that they were members of the government and could not be against it. This was probably the first violent response of the peasantry to the authoritarian project of the PCP-SL.
