Murder of hikers in Huaychao

Community members of Huaychao killed seven Shining Path guerrillas in January 1983 in response to the assassination of community authorities, one of the first violent reactions of peasant communities against the PCP-Sendero Luminoso.

In January 1983, community members of Huaychao, in the highlands of the province of Huanta, killed seven Shining Path members in reaction to the assassination of community authorities. This action represents one of the first violent responses of peasant communities to the authoritarian project of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. The event occurred in the context of growing peasant rejection of the abuses and murders committed by the PCP-SL in the area. This event was one of the most significant of the initial communal reactions against the Shining Path.
