In January 1983, the first popular trial was held in Sacsamarca organized by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso against Professor Emilio. The professor was accused of being a traitor by the Shining Path and publicly executed in the town square. This popular trial was one of the first events of its kind in the area and was part of the increase in assassinations carried out by the PCP-SL in the region. The event contributed to the growing unrest of the local population against the Shining Path, which culminated in February 1983 with the rebellion of the Sacsamarca villagers against the local Shining Path leaders.
