In January 1983, about 55 hikers who had settled in the Umasi school were surprised by a military patrol. Most of them died in the confrontation. This event marked an important turning point, since from that moment on the PCP-SL understood that the war had incorporated new and bigger enemies: the army and the Sinchis, which would soon be joined by some communities that no longer accepted the Shining Path 'new order'. The event occurred in the context of the military counteroffensive initiated in 1983 against the PCP-SL.
