In January 1983, the Peruvian army entered Ayacucho, initiating a counteroffensive against the PCP-SL. This entry radically changed the behavior of the PCP-SL in relation to the population, adopting a much more coercive attitude and increasing the assassinations of those who were against it. One of the first military actions was in Umasi, Víctor Fajardo, where about 55 hikers who had settled in the local school were surprised by a military patrol, most of them dying. The entry of the army marked the beginning of the most violent period of the conflict, with 1983 registering the highest number of deaths in the region.
