This attack marked the beginning of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso's actions in the Alto Huallaga region. The PCP-SL sought to achieve political hegemony in the area, channeling the regional struggles and those of the producers' committees into their own political agenda. The subversives began their armed actions and used the cities as sounding boards for their activities in defense of coca and against the eradicators.
