Installation of military base in Marcavalle
In 1983, a military base was installed in Marcavalle, La Oroya, as a counter-subversive measure that limited the presence of the Shining Path in the metallurgical zone. This military base was also responsible for arbitrary detentions of union leaders accused of terrorism.
In 1983, a military base was installed in Marcavalle, district of La Oroya, as part of the Peruvian State's counter-subversive strategy. This military installation had a significant impact on the presence of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in the metallurgical zone of La Oroya, considerably limiting its capacity for action in the metallurgical union and workers' assemblies. The Marcavalle military base became a center of operations from where arrests of union leaders and demonstrators were carried out, many times arbitrarily accused of terrorism. The military at this base intercepted demonstrations and carried out intelligence operations infiltrating union movements.
