Installation of military base in Centromín Peru

In 1983, the mining company Centromín Perú arranged for the installation of a military base within its jurisdiction in Cerro de Pasco in order to prevent PCP-SL attacks against its installations. This measure was taken in the context of increasing violence and threats against mining centers in the region.

After the PCP-SL attacks on the Vinchos mining unit in 1986, where the mine manager, assistant manager and superintendent were killed and the concentrator plant was dynamited causing irreparable damage, Centromín Perú arranged for the installation of a military base within its jurisdiction in 1983. This military installation was intended to prevent future attacks against the company's facilities. The military presence in Centromín Perú was part of the strategy to protect the mining centers from the growing threat of the PCP-SL in the region. The constant strikes and work stoppages carried out by the miners in 1982 had exacerbated the mood of some of the company owners, who constantly sent military contingents to provide security to the mining camps.
