Election of Michel Azcueta as Mayor of Villa El Salvador

Michel Azcueta, a militant of Izquierda Unida (IU), was elected mayor of Villa El Salvador in 1983, leading the campaign to establish VES as an independent district that same year. Azcueta won the municipal elections in the context of a broad movement to make VES an independent municipal district, which was approved by the National Congress in 1983. His election took place in a district especially recognized for its organizational level, its capacity for self-management and the participation of its inhabitants in local decision making. Azcueta was subsequently re-elected in 1986, and under his leadership IU easily won the municipal elections in the district in 1989.
