The year 1984 corresponds to the moment of greatest intensity of the Peruvian internal armed conflict, causing the highest number of deaths and disappearances reported to the CVR (19% of the total number of victims). This period is part of the initial phase of the conflict, centered essentially in the department of Ayacucho, where there was a notable escalation of violence, especially after 1983. The intensification occurred after the armed forces were put in charge of the counter-subversive struggle in December 1982. During 1983-1984, both the PCP-Sendero Luminoso and State agents acted in the same socio-cultural spaces, affecting mainly the rural and Quechua-speaking world.
