FFAA takes control of emergency zones in Ayacucho

The Armed Forces took control of the emergency provinces of Ayacucho on December 31, 1982, with 2,000 military troops deployed mainly in rural areas, following the presidential ultimatum and the assassination of public officials.

On December 31, 1982, the Armed Forces assumed internal control of the department of Ayacucho in the face of a growing wave of attacks. A total of 2,000 military troops took possession of the provinces declared in a state of emergency, starting with the rural areas. This decision was precipitated by the assassination of several public officials in Ayacucho and came after President Fernando Belaunde Terry gave an ultimatum on December 27 for the subversives to surrender their weapons before the Armed Forces took control of the emergency zone. The PCP-SL responded with attacks in that department and in Huancavelica.
