Armed Forces take control of the department of Ayacucho

The Armed Forces took control of Ayacucho, initiating an escalation of violence that reached its peak in 1984.

The Armed Forces took control of the department of Ayacucho on December 29, 1982. After this event, the dynamics of the war increased notably until it reached its highest peak in 1984. This year registered the highest death toll of the entire armed conflict, with more than 3,000 people killed, of which more than 95% were Quechua speakers.
