Armed Forces take control of internal order in Ayacucho, initiating period of mass disappearances

The Armed Forces entered the counter-subversive struggle, replacing the police forces in the control of internal order in the provinces of the department of Ayacucho declared in emergency. This marked a turning point in the conflict, with a dramatic increase in cases of forced disappearance. According to information from the CVR, the number of cases reported for 1983 was 30 times higher than for 1982.
