Confrontation in Maraypata, Churcampa

Inhabitants of Maraypata, Churcampa, successfully confronted a group of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso who tried to punish them for forming peasant patrols. Several subversives were killed in the confrontation.

On December 27, 1982, the inhabitants of the Maraypata annex in Churcampa clashed with a group of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso who wanted to punish them for having formed peasant patrols. In the confrontation, several subversives died and were buried nearby. This event represents one of the first cases of organized peasant resistance against the PCP-SL in the Huancavelica area. The formation of peasant patrols was seen by the Shining Path as a threat to their territorial control, which motivated the attempt to punish them, resulting in their defeat.
