Attack on Mayor Víctor Jorge Jáuregui

The provincial mayor of Huamanga, Víctor Jorge Jáuregui (AP), was shot three times in the face by two presumed members of the PCP-SL who shot him from a motorcycle during a public act. This attack was one of the assassinations of public officials that precipitated the entry of the Armed Forces into the anti-subversive struggle in Ayacucho.

On December 11, 1982, in the middle of a public act, the provincial mayor of Huamanga, Víctor Jorge Jáuregui, a Popular Action (AP) militant, was wounded by two presumed members of the PCP-SL. The attackers were driving a motorcycle from where they shot him three times in the face. This attack was part of a wave of assassinations against public officials in Ayacucho that precipitated the decision of the Armed Forces to join the anti-subversive struggle. The attack occurred in a context of increasing violence in the department, days before the Armed Forces took over internal control of Ayacucho.
