Multi-communal Iquichan rebellion against the Shining Path

Iquichan communities rebel against imposition of the Shining Path 'new order'.

Towards the end of 1982 and the beginning of 1983, the Iquichan communities in the highlands of the province of Huanta staged a multi-communal rebellion against the Shining Path. This open confrontation was unleashed by the Shining Path and their disregard for the cultural and ethnic reality of the community. The 'new order' imposed by Sendero eliminated local idiosyncrasy, repressed community authority, festivals, religious worship and fairs, which transformed the initial peasant passivity into violent rejection.
