Murder of Modesto Melgar
Modesto Melgar was killed by the PCP-SL in Chillcapampa, Cangallo, where the Shining Path had established a barracks on the banks of the Pampas River. This event occurred in the context of the expansion of the PCP-SL's territorial control in the area.
Modesto Melgar was murdered by the PCP-SL in December 1982 in a place called Chillcapampa, on the banks of the Pampas River in the jurisdiction of Cangallo. At that time, the PCP-SL had set up a barracks in this area. Previously, the hikers had attacked the Civil Guard post in Totos and organized the militia in Chacabamba, appointing hiker leaders in each community in the area.
