This event marked a crucial turning point in the Peruvian internal armed conflict. From that moment on, there was a notable escalation of violence, especially from 1983 onwards, reaching its highest point in 1984 when 19% of the total number of victims reported to the CVR was recorded. The initial period of the conflict was essentially centered in the department of Ayacucho and was characterized by high peaks of violence in 1983 and 1984.
