Murder of Alejandro Huamán and Venancio Auccatoma

The Shining Path PCP assassinated Alejandro Huamán, president of the Uchuraccay community, and Venancio Auccatoma at the end of November 1982, in retaliation for their opposition to the Shining Path presence. This triggered the organization of the first multi-communal rebellion against Shining Path in the area.

In late November or early December 1982, the Shining Path PCP assassinated Alejandro Huamán, president of the Uchuraccay community, along with community member Venancio Auccatoma. This assassination was a direct reprisal against Huamán, who had led actions of frontal rejection against the Shining Path presence, including the tearing down and burning of a red PCP-SL flag placed on a hill during the feast of the Virgin of the Rosary in October. After the assassination, no one dared to go near the bodies for fear of suffering the same fate, being branded as 'yana umas' (black heads) by alleged Shining Path spies. This marked a turning point that led the community to seek help from neighboring communities and law enforcement to combat the terrorists.
