Murder of Sósimo Santiago

Sósimo Santiago, a cattle rancher and farmer who encouraged the villagers of Chinche Tingo to defend themselves from subversive incursions, was assassinated on October 22, 1982 by a group of 15 PCP-SL militants. This murder occurred four days after the assassination of the local lieutenant governor.

On October 22, 1982, a group of 15 subversives of the PCP-SL entered the house of Sósimo Santiago, a cattle rancher and farmer who encouraged the villagers to defend themselves from the subversive incursions. He was arrested amidst insults: "dog, you are against the party, now you are going to die [...] neither you nor anyone else is going to stop us! This murder occurred four days after the assassination of Teofilo Rojas, lieutenant governor of Chinche Tingo, who had been killed on October 18, 1982. The assassination of Rojas had provoked the immediate resignation of the other local authorities. These assassinations were part of the PCP-SL strategy of creating a power vacuum through death threats and annihilations of political and local authorities.
