Attack on Umachiri police station

A PCP-SL column attacked the Civil Guard police station in the district of Umachiri, province of Melgar, Puno, marking one of the first significant armed incursions of the subversive group in the Quechua area of the department.

On August 18, 1982, a column of the PCP-SL burst into the Quechua zone of the department of Puno, attacking the Civil Guard station in the district of Umachiri, province of Melgar. This attack represents one of the first significant military actions of the PCP-SL in the Puno region, marking the beginning of its armed presence in the Quechua areas of the department. The action was part of the PCP-SL's initial strategy of attacking rural police posts to establish its presence in the Puno highlands.
