Attack on Umachiri police post and arrests in Ayaviri Prelature
After attack on police post, police detained employees of Prelature and accused Church.
On August 18, the police post of Umachiri, near Ayaviri, was attacked. After this attack the police forced their way into the premises of the Prelature's Social Works, taking the four employees into custody; they also entered the IER. The capitular vicar Francisco d'Alteroche protested and was treated as if the Church was responsible. In the following days peasants and young people linked to the parish were arrested. On August 21 the parish priest of Umachiri was arrested, beaten and locked up. The Prelature issued a communiqué rejecting accusations against priests.
