Andahuaylas declared an emergency area

On August 6, 1982, the province of Andahuaylas in Apurimac was declared an emergency zone due to the increase in the actions of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. This measure marked the official recognition of the expansion of the internal armed conflict into this southern Andean region.

The province of Andahuaylas was declared an emergency zone on August 6, 1982 due to the increase in the actions of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in the region. This province, which borders the department of Ayacucho, was part of the main Regional Committee of the PCP-SL, made up of the departments of Huancavelica, Ayacucho and Apurimac. On December 30 of the same year, the province of Chincheros was created, dividing the former province of Andahuaylas. During this initial period of violence (1980-1983), the process of internal armed conflict in Apurimac was mainly concentrated in the province of Andahuaylas.
