On July 9, 1982, miners from Canarias, in the province of Victor Fajardo, were killed by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. The victims were accused of being informers. The Canarias mine played an important role in the area for a long time as a supplier of dynamite for the subversives. This assassination was part of the central strategy of the PCP-SL to 'beat the countryside' by assassinating authorities and 'enemies' in general.
