The assault on Pacucha occurred three days before the capture of Andarapa, on April 4, 1982. This action was part of the Shining Path strategy of attacking police targets and dismantling state power in the rural areas of Andahuaylas and Chincheros, provinces that had been the scene of important peasant mobilizations for land in 1974.
